The Key to Happiness

The key to happiness is the most sought-after subject on earth. When we’re feeling discontent, we tend to think a change in our lives is the answer to happiness. But after landing that new job or moving into a new home, are we truly happy? There’s much more to finding happiness than we think.

Victor Hugo (1802 – 1885) felt he had the answer when he said, “The supreme happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved; loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves.”

Yes, it is a joy to be loved, but I feel greater joy when I show my love to family and friends. I find that I’m the happiest when I’m thinking of their comfort. What do my loved ones or neighbors need from me? What can I do to make their lives a little easier? Should I bake some cookies and take them to a neighbor? Should I volunteer to help a family member by driving her to a doctor’s appointment? How about taking a son, daughter, or grandchild out for ice cream? What if someone has a few troubles and needs a listening ear? No lectures. Just listening.

Friendship, The Footprints In Your Heart

The scriptures define “friend” in Proverbs 17:17: “A friend loveth at all times.” What a lovely definition! When I looked up what a friend is in the scriptures, this is what I found: “Thy friends do stand by thee, and they shall hail thee again with warm hearts and friendly hands.” (D & C 121:9) I love the thought that my friends will stand by me with friendly hands, ready to help and support me if need be. Peter tells us to “Be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous.” (I Peter 3:8) To me, having compassion for another is true friendship. John compares what the greatest love of all really is when he wrote, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)

Sydney Smith (1771-1845) said, “Life is to be fortified by many friendships. To love, and to be loved, is the greatest happiness of existence.”

Seven Romantic Cozy Mysteries

Most cozy mysteries are about solving a crime, but this series involves missing persons with a touch of romance. What is a “cozy” mystery? It is a G-rated story with no swearing, gore, or sex. A cozy mystery focuses on the characters and their lives as they search for the truth. The Amelia Moore Detective Series has a nice blend of mystery, romance, and humor. Each novel in this series has enough twists to keep the reader guessing. Library of Clean Reads wrote: “This is a fast-paced, creative mystery.”

Bali webThe Bali Mystery – Book 1

Amelia Moore, the founder of the Moore Detective Agency, specializes in missing persons. With the help of her partner, Rick Bonito, the business is flourishing. When Mrs. Brody hires Amelia and Rick to find her missing brother, they find themselves in Bali, Indonesia. They are mystified why her brother quit his job, put his home up for sale, and ran off to this mysterious and exotic island without telling a soul.

“This is a cozy mystery, but there is also suspense, danger and, of course, romance. Throw in two mysterious men in black – complete with black suits and sunglasses and you have all the makings of an exciting novel.” – Library of Clean Reads

Shamrock webThe Shamrock Case – Book 2

When Amelia is hired to search for her client’s grandparents, the case takes them to Ireland. Kate must learn about her heritage. Who are her grandparents and could they still be alive after all these years? Why did her parents leave Ireland suddenly and move to America? Is there more to this case than meets the eye?

“Amelia and Rick have the makings of being a lasting couple that readers will adore and root for. The Shamrock Case moves along quickly. The author paints a vivid picture of the beauty of Ireland. I could easily see the greenery and magnificence of the country. Clarke knows both her characters and locations well and it shines through each word she writes.” –Socrates Book Review

MissHeirwebThe Missing Heir – Book 3

Dell Murphy has passed on and left a fortune to his nephew. He wants his nephew to continue his work at the orphanage in Mexico, but there is one problem. Neal Woods is missing! If Amelia and Rick can’t find him soon, the fortune will be turned over to Dell’s brother and sister who intend to close down “Uncle Dell’s Orphanage.” If that happens, where will the children go?

“It’s refreshing to me to discover a cozy mystery, with two likeable, romantic characters who enjoy each other and are able to solve a mystery together. It is a book I am happy to be able to recommend and share with teens as well as adults of all ages!” – Sherril S. Cannon

Mysterious Doll webThe Mysterious Doll – Book 4

Pauline Jones is confused why her boyfriend took off without telling a soul where he was going. But that isn’t all. Sam Whitaker is accused of stealing a valuable porcelain doll from the museum. His disappearance makes him look guilty, but Pauline is convinced he is innocent. When Amelia finds Sam, she realizes they need to prove his innocence. Where is the antique doll and who has taken it?

“I’ve read all of this author’s mysteries and this one is my favorite! They’re all good, but they just keep getting better and better. I think part of it is getting to know the characters more with each book and watching the way Amelia and her partner, Rick, work together. The mystery element was great! It moved along at a good pace and just when I thought I had it figured out at the end, a few twists were thrown in and I was at a loss once again.” –Katie Watkins, Katies Clean Book Collection

LostLovewebHer Lost Love Book 5

Julie Anderson feels a need to find the man she fell deeply in love with during her youth. When Julie went off to college to become a lawyer, she lost contact with her high school sweetheart. She now wants to know what became of Joey and why he stopped writing to her? This is an assignment that intrigues Amelia. The thought of finding a long-lost love seems quite romantic.

“I love long-lost love stories. So this one grabbed my interest right from the beginning. What I enjoy about this series is that there’s always more to each case than they originally think. This case was no different. I love how their personal relationship is progressing and am excited to see what happens next. Rick is so irresistible and romantic and he steps up big time in this book. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more!” –Melanie Valderrama of Mel’s Shelves

BayouwebMystery on the Bayou – Book 6

While at the beach, Amelia is approached by a woman who is concerned about the son she gave up for adoption sixteen years ago. Millie has been having nightmares that make her fear he is in danger. She petitioned the court to view the sealed records but was refused. Will Amelia and Rick be able to convince the courts to help them? If her son is in danger, will they get there in time?

“I absolutely love this series! Rick and Amelia are adorable together and I enjoy their relationship more now that they’re married. They still flirt with and tease each other and continue to work on their bucket lists. The mystery holds my attention and keeps me guessing at what’s going on. I love the various places they travel so I feel like I get away for a little while. I’m looking forward to their next case!” –Melanie Valderrama, Mel’s Shelves

lighthouse secretwebThe Lighthouse Secret – Book 7

Rick Bonito’s uncle supposedly drowned five years ago and his body was never found, but something did not seem right about the report. Uncle Antonio was an excellent swimmer. His disappearance seems quite suspicious to Rick’s father. He never felt the complete truth had come out about his brother. It is now up to Amelia and Rick to find out the truth about his uncle.

“In the Amelia Moore Detective Series, the author delivers a delightful, fairly fast-paced tale in the pursuit of a missing person, for that’s what Amelia’s agency specializes in. The reader gets a glimpse into the warm, lively Italian Bonito family that Amelia has married into. They seem to be ordinary people, but as in every family, there are secrets that gradually become unravelled.” Sandra Olshaski, Library of Clean Reads

The Rebels Of Cordovia Book Review (The Rebel Series Book 1) by Linda Weaver Clarke

She will also have you laughing out loud, make your heart race and speed up your reading !!! Now, yes, this is a love story but it is a simple, young, innocent love story. It’s a story about a man that is very smitten with a young lady during a time where men were complete gentlmen and the ladies were very proper, however, the lady Robin is not 100% lady and Daniel is trying to be a complete gentleman.

In The Rebels of Cordovia Robin is every bit of a woman but also possesses the skills needed to fend for herself and others. Enduring Trials

“The road is rough,” I said,

“Dear Lord, there are stones that hurt me so.”

And He said, “Dear child, I understand,

I walked it long ago.”

“But there is a cool green path,” I said.

“Let me walk there for a time.”

“No child,” He gently answered me,

The green road does not climb.”

“My burden,” I said, “is far too great,

How can I bare it so?”

“My child,” said He, “I remember its weight,

I carried my cross, you know.”

“But,” I said, “I wish there were friends with me

Who would make my way their own.”

“Ah, yes,” He said, “Gethsemane

Was hard to face alone.”

And so I climbed the stony path,

Content at last to know

That where my Master had not gone,

I would not need to go.

And strangely then I found new friends,

The burden grew less sore,

As I remembered long ago,

He went that way before.

–Leona B. Gates

We live in a world where we must endure trials, but we must realize that we grow from the many experiences we have in life. Eugene Hansen said, “I heard my father remark on more than one occasion, ‘I don’t mind being educated in the school of hard knocks—it’s the refresher courses I keep getting that are the trial.’” (W. Eugene Hansen, “Children and the Family”, Ensign, May 1998, 58)

Laughter is the Best Medicine

Searching for happiness is a big part of our life. We not only want it but we have an inner need and desire to spread joy to others. I notice that when I tell a funny story and make someone laugh, I wish I could tell another one. Laughter and smiles are contagious and spread from person to person.

“Humor helps keep life in perspective,” said Gary K. Palmer, a BYU professor. “When a person laughs, blood pressure decreases, heart rate and respiration increase, the body releases endorphins, and depression declines. After the laughter subsides and you relax again, that good feeling has a lasting effect, even until the next day. Not many medicines will do that.” (The Power of Laughter, Ensign, September 2007)”
